Cornea
Cornea Health Overview
The clear front covering of your eye is known as the cornea. It’s responsible for focusing light that passes through, making it vital to clear vision.
Corneal scarring, diseases like keratoconus, and eye injuries, can interfere with vision, causing distortions or even loss. See your eye doctor to ensure your corneas are healthy.

Cornea Options
Photorefractive Keratectomy (PTK)
PTK is an effective treatment for several corneal conditions like keratoconus and scarring. Using an excimer laser, your surgeon can reduce scarring and astigmatism which leads to vision improvement. Find out if this solution works for your condition during your appointment.
Pterygium Surgery
Eye pterygium is a growth that can infiltrate the surface of your cornea, causing irritation and redness. However, when it causes vision complications or astigmatism, patients may have eye surgery to remove the pterygium. Find out if this solution is right for you during your appointment.
Corneal Cross-linking (CXL)
CXL is a procedure used to treat patients with keratoconus, a disease that causes the cornea to weaken, become thin, and irregularly shaped. The cross-linking procedure adds cross-links to the cornea, which restrengthening its structure and enables it to hold its shape. This will stop it from thinning further and prevent vision loss. Learn more about this procedure during your initial appointment.
Intacs
Intacs are another solution we offer patients with keratoconus. These tiny, clear plastic implants are placed over the affected cornea. Intacs flatten your cornea, helping restore its original shape and providing long-term vision correction. Want to find out more about this treatment option? Ask about it during your appointment.
Scleral Lenses
Scleral lenses are custom, large-diameter rigid gas-permeable contact lenses that are designed to assist patients with ocular conditions, corneal irregularities, and visual impairments. The unique aspect of these lenses is that they are precisely made for a personalized fit, as they need to be the perfect shape for your eye in order for them to work to their full potential. They will be created to arch over your cornea and rest on your eye’s conjunctiva overlying the sclera. However, because these lenses are a wider diameter compared to other contact lenses, it will take some time to adjust to them.
If you think this treatment is right for you, learn more about it during your next visit.
