Tear Duct Problems
Tear Duct Overview
Unless you’re constantly cutting onions or watching soap operas, your eyes shouldn’t tear frequently or excessively. If they are, you likely have a clog in the tear duct that may benefit from treatment. Contact one of our offices to learn more about your options.
What Causes Tear Duct Problems?
Not all cases of tear duct problems require surgery. However, in severe cases, you need to contact an eye care provider you can trust. Speak with our highly trained surgeon about your options.
Blocked tear ducts can happen at any age for several reasons:
- Congenital blockage: this often happens to newborns with underdeveloped or narrow tear ducts.
- Age: as you age, your puncta may narrow
- Infection: chronic sinus infections and eye infections can cause blockages.
- Injury: an eye injury near the tear duct can block it.
- Medication: some medications, including chemotherapy, can narrow the tear drainage passages.
