How CXL Works

As with any procedure, the first step is ensuring it’s right for you through an appointment.

There are two main types of CXL procedures: epi-on and epi-off. The primary difference between the two is whether or not the outermost layer of the cornea, called the epithelium, is removed prior to the corneal treatment process.

During CXL, your surgeon use vitamin eye drops (riboflavin) followed by exposure to UV-A light, which activates the riboflavin and leads to the formation of new cross-links between the collagen fibers in the cornea. This procedure takes approximately one hour for a single eye but can be done in around an hour and a half for both eyes.

Post-Op Recovery

With Epi-On CXL, most patients are able to return to their normal activities within a few days, although it may take several weeks for the full benefits of the procedure to be realized. With epi-off CXL, the recovery time is generally longer and iIt may take weeks for you to notice vision improvements following CXL. Most patients only need the procedure done once. Your exact results will be discussed between you and your surgeon.
